School Groups

We are delighted to carry out walks for international school students visiting from abroad as well as for UK primary and secondary schools. From an introduction to Dartmoor to more focused trips designed to support meeting curriculum goals, we are passionate about taking young people onto the moors as part of their learning.

Locations
Due to Dartmoor's small roads and coach access limitations, there are five main locations that we recommend for school groups to walk from (however, we are happy to walk from other locations if access is possible):
  • Haytor – For groups from Exeter, Newton Abbot and Torbay (TQ13 9XS)
  • Hound Tor - For groups from Exeter, Newton Abbot and Torbay (TQ13 9XG)
  • Postbridge – For groups from Exeter, Newton Abbot and Torbay (PL20 6TH)
  • Princetown – For groups from Plymouth and South Cornwall (PL20 6QF)
  • Belstone – For groups from A30, Okehampton, Exeter and North Dartmoor (EX20 1RB)
Group Size
Each group will be accompanied by one guide for every 15 students plus up to 3 teachers. Groups must include one adult leader for every 10 children who must accompany the walk and remain responsible for the group's behaviour. The group leader remains 'in loco parentis' throughout the walk.

Cost
For every guide needed, we charge £120 for 3 hours or £200 for a full day (6 hours)

Clothing and Equipment
The ground is normally rough, often wet and the vegetation prickly. The weather is more extreme than in other parts of Devon and can deteriorate rapidly and unexpectedly. Boots or wellingtons are strongly recommended as even sensible shoes are likely to get wet through. Children will need to take at least three layers of clothing, the top one of which should be waterproof. The teacher/group leader must ensure that every member of the group is properly equipped before arrival on Dartmoor. A spare set of dry clothing for each pupil will make the journey back much more comfortable.

Parental Consent
Parental consent is an essential pre-requisite for any outdoor learning experience. A pre-condition of our service is that all schools/ organisations have obtained consent for all participants signed by their parent(s)/ guardian(s).

Curriculum Packages
We have designed five walks to cover a range of topics that can meet your curriculum needs. They are aimed at children aged 7-13 and suitable for Key Stage 2 and 3 learners. Each package comes with pre
and post visit information and activity ideas so you can incorporate additional learning into your classroom before and after the walk.

These packages have been written by some of most experienced guides who all have a background in teaching and education and are designed to be adaptable to the different groups of children who might come out on the moors with us.

Choose from:
  • Geology and Industry on Dartmoor
  • Rivers
  • How the Dartmoor landscape has changed over time
  • Human Occupation of Dartmoor over time (archaeology)
  • Bogs & Mosses
  • Storytelling on the moors (literacy)

These walks can be booked for a variety of different locations across Dartmoor so please get in touch to discuss preferred dates and locations.
